Concerning Zoeterwoude

Concerning Leiderdorp

The most important sources for genealogical research on the period before 1811 are the registers of baptisms, marriages and funerals kept by the various churches. After 1811 in the Netherlands it was ordained by law that the municipal authorities should register births, marriages and deaths. Further information on people can be found in Bevolkingsregisters (municipal registers of inhabitants), census records, tax registers, the archives of the Weeskamers (orphans' courts or courts of chancery, public bodies that managed the assets of orphans) and the notary publics, Poorterboeken (registers of citizenship), addressbooks and Herenboekjes (books with the names of Leiden magistrates).

Law restricts public access to the registers of municipal registry offices in the Netherlands.

All the records mentioned above can be accessed through indexes and duplicates of the original records can be seen and copied in the reading room.

It is the intention of the Regional Archives Leiden to incorporate the following indexes in the Digital Family Tree: the indexes on the church registers of baptisms, marriages and funerals and the indexes on the municipal registers of births, marriages and deaths for Leiden, Zoeterwoude, Warmond, Leiderdorp and Rijnsburg.

A group of volunteers is hard at work to put the remaining indexes into databases! If you are interested in joining this group, please contact us.
